It sure looks like X (Twitter) has a Verified bot problem | TechCrunch

Jan 10, 2024 - techcrunch.com
Social media platform X, previously known as Twitter, is reportedly facing a problem with verified bots. Despite owner Elon Musk's suggestion that paid verification could help eliminate bots, a video on Instagram Threads shows numerous bots, including verified ones, posting a specific phrase linked to OpenAI's chatbot. Some users speculate that X might be behind the bot activity to inflate metrics like daily and monthly active users. However, this claim is unproven and could be the work of spammers using abandoned Twitter handles.

The issue of bots extends beyond those powered by AI, with many bot farms operating without OpenAI's assistance. Data from social media analytics platform Fedica shows that only 202 accounts posted OpenAI's automated response in the past month, suggesting the problem might be larger than it appears. X also admitted to a verified spammer problem last summer, introducing new DM settings to combat it. The company, which claims to have 550 million monthly users, has not commented on the bot issue.

Key takeaways:

  • X, the company formerly known as Twitter, is facing a problem with verified bots posting a specific phrase related to OpenAI's use case policy, indicating that these accounts may be using AI to create posts.
  • Some users suggest that the bot activity could be coming from X itself, as a way to boost metrics like daily and monthly active users. However, this is not confirmed and could also be the work of spammers using abandoned Twitter handles.
  • Despite efforts to combat the bot problem, including the introduction of paid verification and a potential small monthly payment for all users, the issue persists. This includes both AI-powered accounts and bot farms run without OpenAI's assistance.
  • X also struggles with spam in users' direct message inboxes from Verified users, indicating that the Verification system is not effectively weeding out spammers. The company has not responded to requests for comment on these issues.
