Korea’s Best-Funded AI Semiconductor Startup Aims To Take On Nvidia With Samsung-Made Chips

Feb 05, 2024 - forbes.com
South Korean AI chip startup, Rebellions, has raised $124 million in Series B funding, bringing its total funding to $210 million, the highest in the country's AI chip market. The funding round, which valued the company at $650 million, was led by South Korean telecom operator KT and included investors such as Temasek’s Pavilion Capital and Korelya Capital. The company plans to use the funds to develop a next-generation AI chip for running large language models and hyperscalers, aiming to offer a cheaper alternative to Nvidia's chips.

Rebellions is co-developing its new chip, Rebel, with Samsung and plans to use the tech giant's high bandwidth memory chips and its 4-nanometer chip manufacturing process. The company aims to complete the development of Rebel by the end of this year and start mass production in 2025. The startup believes that by using domestic suppliers and manufacturers, it can significantly reduce manufacturing costs and compete with Nvidia in the AI chip market.
