MediaTek's Next Chip Will Race Qualcomm to Bring Generative AI to Phones

Nov 06, 2023 - cnet.com
MediaTek has announced its latest silicon for high-end Android phones, the Dimensity 9300, which offers performance and efficiency improvements and on-device generative AI. The chip is expected to compete with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, which also features on-device generative AI. MediaTek's chip has a 46% better peak performance and 40% lower power requirement than its predecessor, the Dimensity 9200, and also offers better ray tracing. The Dimensity 9300 is expected to be used in phones from Chinese manufacturers like Xiaomi and Vivo, while US manufacturers like Samsung and Motorola typically use Snapdragon chips.

The Dimensity 9300 also enhances camera capabilities with features like 16-object segmentation, pixel-level autofocus, and standalone optical image stabilization. It also supports dual active displays at 4K up to 120Hz for foldable phones and offers improved connectivity with MediaTek's UltraSave 5G. However, it remains to be seen how phone manufacturers will utilize the chip's generative AI capabilities and whether it will live up to its benchmark claims.

Key takeaways:
