Meta and Microsoft say they will buy AMD's new AI chip as an alternative to Nvidia's

Dec 06, 2023 - cnbc.com
AMD has unveiled its new AI chip, the Instinct MI300X, which is set to be used by Meta, OpenAI, and Microsoft, as announced at an AMD investor event. The chip, which is expected to start shipping next year, could provide a cheaper alternative to Nvidia's graphics processors, which are currently essential for creating and deploying AI programs. The MI300X is based on a new architecture and features 192GB of high-performance HBM3 memory, which can transfer data faster and accommodate larger AI models.

AMD has also improved its software suite, ROCm, to compete with Nvidia's CUDA software. However, the company has not yet revealed the pricing for the MI300X. AMD CEO Lisa Su suggested that the chip would have to be cheaper than Nvidia's to attract customers. Despite not forecasting massive sales for the chip, AMD estimates the total market for AI GPUs could reach $400 billion over the next four years.
