Meta to use Instagram and Facebook posts from as far back as 2007 to train artificial intelligence tools

Jun 10, 2024 - abc.net.au
Starting June 26, Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, will begin using user data from as far back as 2007 to train and improve their AI tools. This includes posts, photos, captions, and messages to Meta's AI chatbot, but not private messages. However, only users in the European Union and the US state of Illinois can opt out due to AI protection laws in place. This has raised concerns among users, particularly artists who fear it will affect their livelihood.

In response to this policy update, many artists are considering leaving platforms like Instagram. Advocacy group NOYB has launched 11 complaints against Meta in the EU in relation to this new policy. Meanwhile, alternative platforms like Cara, an artist-run, anti-AI social platform, have seen a surge in users. Despite the backlash, Meta maintains that they are committed to building AI responsibly and that the information used is consistent with its privacy policy and terms of service.
