Meta’s battle with ChatGPT begins now

Apr 18, 2024 - theverge.com
Meta is integrating its AI assistant into the search boxes of Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, and Messenger, and it will also start appearing in the main Facebook feed. The assistant, which is now accessible via a standalone website at Meta.ai, is designed to compete with ChatGPT. To achieve this, Meta is announcing Llama 3, the next version of its open-source model, which it claims outperforms competing models on key benchmarks. Two smaller Llama 3 models are being released today, with a larger, multimodal version due in the coming months.

The Meta AI assistant is unique in integrating real-time search results from both Bing and Google, and its image generation has been upgraded to create animations and high-res images on the fly. The assistant is being rolled out in English to several countries, with more to follow. Meta is also introducing two open-source Llama 3 models for outside developers to use. The largest version of Llama 3, which has over 400 billion parameters, is still being trained and may be open-sourced in the future.
