Microsoft is confident Windows on Arm could finally beat Apple

Apr 08, 2024 - theverge.com
Microsoft is set to reveal its “AI PCs” next month in Seattle, with a focus on Arm-powered Windows laptops that are expected to outperform Apple’s M3-powered MacBook Air in CPU performance and AI-accelerated tasks. The company is banking on Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon X Elite processors, which will be featured in various Windows laptops and Microsoft’s latest Surface hardware. Microsoft plans to demonstrate the superior speed of these processors in CPU tasks, AI acceleration, and app emulation, claiming that the new Windows AI PCs will have faster app emulation than Apple's Rosetta 2.

Microsoft is also planning to release consumer models of its upcoming Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6 with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite processors. These devices, internally referred to as “next-gen AI Copilot PCs”, will have access to new AI-powered Windows features, including an AI Explorer app. The company is also looking to enhance video streaming on Arm-powered Windows devices with a new AI-powered feature. Microsoft's AI PC reveal will take place on May 20th, with CEO Satya Nadella discussing the company's AI vision across hardware and software. The company expects that by the end of 2026, 50% of new Windows devices will be running AI-capable chips.
