Microsoft just stepped up its AI game against Google — by hiring the cofounder of Google's DeepMind

Mar 19, 2024 - businessinsider.com
Mustafa Suleyman, co-founder of Google's DeepMind, has been appointed as the CEO of Microsoft's AI division. He will oversee consumer AI products and research, including Copilot, Bing, and Edge, and report directly to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. This is the first time one leader will oversee Microsoft's consumer AI products. The move is seen as part of Microsoft's strategy to strengthen its position in the AI field, beyond its ongoing partnership with OpenAI.

Suleyman's startup, Inflection AI, will cease operations of its AI chatbot, Pi, and instead sell AI software to businesses. Inflection's co-founder, Karén Simonyan, will join Microsoft's AI division as Chief Scientist, along with several unnamed teammates. Microsoft will continue to provide Inflection with the computing power to build its AI models. The move intensifies Microsoft's competition with Google, from which Suleyman departed in 2022.
