Mistral AI makes waves with deals across tech giants including Microsoft, IBM

Feb 29, 2024 - venturebeat.com
Paris-based AI startup Mistral AI has secured major partnerships with IBM and Microsoft just a year after its founding. The company, which specializes in natural language processing models and conversational AI, has launched its flagship commercial model, Mistral Large, via Microsoft's Azure cloud platform, making it the second provider after OpenAI to offer a commercial large language model on Azure. Mistral Large is designed to compete with OpenAI’s GPT-3 and GPT-4 models, and according to Mistral’s benchmarks, it is the world’s second most capable commercial language model.

In addition to the Microsoft deal, Mistral has also signed an agreement with IBM to provide an optimized version of its open source Mistral-8x7B model on the IBM Watson AI platform. This allows enterprises to utilize Mistral’s AI capabilities alongside IBM’s own offerings. These partnerships demonstrate Mistral's aggressive growth strategy and its aim to make its technology widely available through cloud platforms and collaborations. The company, backed by $415 million in funding, is quickly establishing itself as a key player in the AI industry.
