Mistral's new Devstral AI model was designed for coding | TechCrunch

May 21, 2025 - techcrunch.com
AI startup Mistral has announced Devstral, a new AI model focused on coding, developed in partnership with All Hands AI. Available under an Apache 2.0 license, Devstral can be used commercially without restrictions and reportedly outperforms other open models like Google’s Gemma 3 27B on coding benchmarks. It is optimized for tasks such as exploring codebases and editing multiple files, and can run on devices like an Nvidia RTX 4090 or a Mac with 32GB RAM. Devstral is available for download on platforms like Hugging Face and through Mistral’s API, priced at $0.1 per million input tokens and $0.3 per million output tokens.

Mistral, founded in 2023 and backed by VCs including General Catalyst, has raised over €1.1 billion and serves clients like BNP Paribas and AXA. Devstral is Mistral’s third product launch this month, following the release of Mistral Medium 3 and Le Chat Enterprise. The company is working on a larger coding model and aims to build a range of AI-powered services. Devstral marks a shift from Mistral’s previous model, Codestral, which was not available for commercial use.
