Modular looks to boost AI mojo with $100M funding raise

Aug 24, 2023 - venturebeat.com
AI startup Modular has raised $100 million in a funding round led by General Catalyst, bringing its total funding to $130 million. The company, founded by former Google employees Chris Lattner and Tim Davis, aims to simplify AI deployment across different types of hardware with its Modular AI runtime engine and the Mojo programming language for AI. The Modular AI engine acts as a new backend for AI frameworks, enabling AI workloads to be accelerated and portable across hardware.

Modular is also addressing the challenge of programming languages for AI with Mojo. The language is a superset of Python, which is the standard for data science and ML development but has limitations at high scale. Mojo allows developers to support existing Python code with the required performance and scalability, eliminating the need to rewrite code in C++. The language is currently in private preview and will be more widely available in September.

Key takeaways:

  • AI startup Modular has raised $100 million in a funding round led by General Catalyst, bringing its total funding to $130 million.
  • Modular aims to fix AI infrastructure for developers with its AI runtime engine and the Mojo programming language for AI.
  • The Modular AI engine is designed to break the current siloed approach of running AI workloads, enabling them to be accelerated and portable across hardware.
  • Mojo, a new programming language for AI, is designed to support existing Python code with required performance and scalability, eliminating the need to rewrite code in C++ for large scale workloads.
