New AI tools much hyped but not much used, study says

May 29, 2024 - bbc.co.uk
A survey conducted by the Reuters Institute and Oxford University suggests that despite the hype, very few people are regularly using artificial intelligence (AI) products like ChatGPT. The study, which surveyed 12,000 people in six countries, found that only 2% of British respondents use such tools daily. However, 18 to 24-year-olds are the most eager adopters of the technology. The research also revealed a "mismatch" between the hype around AI and public interest in it, with 30% of UK respondents unaware of prominent AI products.

The study also explored public opinions on the impact of generative AI, the new generation of AI products that can respond to prompts with human-like answers. While most respondents believe generative AI will have a significant societal impact in the next five years, particularly in news, media, and science, views on whether this impact will be positive or negative varied. People were generally optimistic about the use of generative AI in science and healthcare, but more cautious about its use in news and journalism, and concerned about potential job security threats.

  • Despite the hype and investment in generative AI, it is yet to become part of people’s routine internet use, with 30% of people in the UK saying they have not heard of any of the most prominent products.
