New Apple Leak Reveals Important iPhone 16 Design Decision

Jan 21, 2024 - forbes.com
Apple is reportedly developing a new mechanical camera button for the iPhone 16, according to sources speaking with The Information. The button, which has been leaked several times, will not only have a capacitive surface area but will also be able to register touch and pressure. Users will be able to lightly press the button to focus, hard press to record a video, or swipe left and right to zoom in and out. The button will be located on the right side of the phone, under the power button, and is expected to be a key selling point for the iPhone 16.

While other manufacturers like Samsung and Google are focusing on AI-powered features, Apple is investing in improving the basic shooting experience with a physical button. This follows the multi-functional Action button on the iPhone 15. However, other manufacturers have different approaches, such as Samsung's stylus for precision touches on the Galaxy S24, and HTC's touch-sensitive buttons on the U12. Google's Pixel 2, manufactured by HTC, had an "active edge" that could be squeezed to summon Google Assistant.

Key takeaways:

  • Apple is reportedly testing a new mechanical camera button for the iPhone 16, which will allow users to focus, record a video, or zoom in and out by pressing or swiping the button.
  • The new button will be placed on the right-side of the phone, just under the power button, and is expected to be a key differentiator for the iPhone 16.
  • While other manufacturers like Samsung and Google are focusing on implementing AI into everyday picture taking, Apple is investing in improving the basic shooting experience with a physical button.
  • Despite already having a multi-functional Action button on the iPhone 15, Apple is considering adding another physical input method, which contrasts with other manufacturers who are replacing mechanical inputs with touch sensitive buttons or styluses.
