Newsroom AI guidelines ‘lack teeth,’ study finds - Poynter

Sep 12, 2023 - poynter.org
A working paper from the University of Oxford Internet Institute has highlighted weaknesses in the AI guidelines of newsrooms across 12 countries. The research found that despite the diversity of the countries, there was a surprising degree of uniformity in the guidelines. However, few newsrooms were found to incorporate audience feedback or have plans to enforce the rules. The paper also found little documentation about what happens when reporters or editors violate the guidance, and few mentions of rules about relationships with technology vendors.

In other news, Disney and Charter Communications have resolved their contract dispute, restoring ESPN, ABC, FX and National Geographic to 15 million Spectrum cable TV customers. The deal will also provide Spectrum/Charter subscribers with access to the ESPN+ and Disney+ streaming services at no additional cost. However, sports fans missed the opening NFL and college football weekend and the U.S. Open due to the dispute.

Key takeaways:

  • A study from the University of Oxford Internet Institute found that many newsrooms are not incorporating audience feedback in their guidelines for AI use, and there are few plans to enforce these rules.
  • The study also found that newsrooms have sought little input from audiences on the topic of artificial intelligence. Poynter is asking for reader feedback to inform their own AI policies.
  • Disney and Charter Communications resolved their contract dispute, restoring several channels to 15 million Spectrum cable TV customers. The resolution included access to ESPN+ and Disney+ streaming services at no additional cost for Spectrum/Charter subscribers.
  • The Washington Post has launched a weekly newsletter to keep readers updated on the four criminal cases against former President Donald Trump. The newsletter will provide summaries of the prior week’s developments, news updates about upcoming court dates, and analysis of each case's progress.
