OpenAI adds former NSA chief to its board

Jun 14, 2024 - cnbc.com
OpenAI has announced the appointment of Paul M. Nakasone, a retired U.S. Army general and former director of the National Security Agency, as its newest board member. Nakasone, who was the longest-serving leader of the U.S. Cyber Command, will also join OpenAI's recently created Safety and Security Committee. The committee is currently evaluating the company's processes and safeguards. Other board members include Adam D'Angelo, Larry Summers, Bret Taylor, Sam Altman, Dr. Sue Desmond-Hellmann, Nicole Seligman, and Fidji Simo.

In addition to bolstering its board, OpenAI has also hired two top executives and announced a partnership with Apple for a ChatGPT-Siri integration. Sarah Friar, former CEO of Nextdoor and finance chief at Square, is joining as chief financial officer, while Kevin Weil, an ex-president at Planet Labs and former senior vice president at Twitter, has been appointed as the new chief product officer. These appointments come as OpenAI's large language models gain importance across the tech sector and competition rapidly emerges in the generative artificial intelligence market.
