OpenAI and Microsoft reportedly planning $100 billion datacenter project for an AI supercomputer

Mar 30, 2024 - tomshardware.com
Microsoft and OpenAI are reportedly planning to build a massive datacenter to house an AI-focused supercomputer, currently named "Stargate", which could cost over $115 billion. The supercomputer, expected to be operational by 2028, would be the largest in a series of datacenter projects the two companies plan to build over the next six years. The report suggests that Microsoft would bear the cost of the datacenter, which could be 100 times more expensive than some of the largest operating centers today.

The companies are building these supercomputers in phases, with Stargate being a phase 5 system. A phase 4 system, which would cost less, may launch as early as 2026. The supercomputer could require several gigawatts of power, leading Microsoft and OpenAI to consider alternative power sources, including nuclear. The report also indicates that OpenAI is looking to move away from reliance on Nvidia and would prefer to use Ethernet cables instead of Nvidia's InfiniBand cables.
