Feb 07, 2025 - slashdot.org
OpenAI, in collaboration with Oracle and SoftBank, is planning to develop large-scale data center campuses across 16 U.S. states as part of the $100 billion Stargate initiative. This effort aims to bolster U.S. AI infrastructure and potentially revitalize certain regions. OpenAI has issued a request for proposals to these states and is considering locations in Arizona, California, Florida, Louisiana, Maryland, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Utah, Texas, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, and West Virginia. Construction has already begun in Abilene, Texas, with more sites to be announced in the coming months.

The company plans to build between five to ten data center campuses, each designed to support at least one gigawatt of power. The number of campuses may vary based on power capacity. These centers are expected to create thousands of jobs, including construction and operational roles, although the first center in Abilene is projected to generate only 57 jobs.
