OpenAI cures GPT-4 ‘laziness’ with new updates

Jan 25, 2024 - theverge.com
OpenAI has updated its GPT-4 Turbo model to address issues of 'laziness' where the AI failed to complete tasks. The updated version is designed to perform tasks like code generation more thoroughly than the previous model. GPT-4 Turbo, trained on data as recent as April 2023, is only available in preview, while the more widely available GPT-4, trained on data prior to September 2021, may still exhibit the same issues. Over 70% of users have migrated to GPT-4 Turbo due to its more updated knowledge base, and further updates are expected in the coming months.

In addition to the GPT-4 Turbo update, OpenAI has also launched smaller AI models called embeddings, defined as sequences of numbers that represent concepts within content like natural language or codes. These models, named text-embedding-3-small and text-embedding-3-large, assist applications using retrieval-augmented generation to understand the relationship between different contents. These new models are available now.

Key takeaways:

  • OpenAI has updated GPT-4 Turbo to complete tasks like code generation more thoroughly and reduce instances of 'laziness' where the model doesn't complete a task.
  • GPT-4 Turbo is a more recent version of GPT-4, trained on information as recent as April 2023, and is only available in a preview.
  • More than 70 percent of those using GPT-4 via its API have moved to GPT-4 Turbo due to its more updated knowledge base, and more updates are expected in the coming months.
  • OpenAI has also launched smaller AI models called embeddings, which help applications using retrieval-augmented generation figure out the relationship of different contents it’s accessing.
