OpenAI just made its first cybersecurity investment  | TechCrunch

Apr 03, 2025 - techcrunch.com
Generative AI has significantly enhanced the capabilities of hackers, enabling activities like deepfaking and creating fake documents. OpenAI, recognizing these threats, has invested in Adaptive Security, a New York-based startup that raised $43 million in a Series A round co-led by OpenAI’s startup fund and Andreessen Horowitz. Adaptive Security specializes in simulating AI-generated hacks to train employees to recognize and respond to these threats. The platform covers phone calls, texts, and emails, identifying vulnerable areas within companies and focusing on social engineering hacks that exploit human error, such as clicking on malicious links.

Adaptive Security, launched in 2023, already serves over 100 customers and plans to use the new funding to hire engineers and enhance its product. The startup is part of a growing list of cybersecurity firms addressing AI-related threats, including Cyberhaven and Snyk. Co-founder and CEO Brian Long, a seasoned entrepreneur, emphasizes the importance of staying ahead in the AI "arms race" against cyber threats. As AI threats evolve, Long advises employees to take precautions like deleting voicemails to prevent voice cloning.
