Optical interconnect developer Celestial AI raises $175M in fresh funding - SiliconANGLE

Mar 27, 2024 - siliconangle.com
Optical interconnect developer Celestial AI has raised $175 million in a Series C funding round. The round was led by the U.S. Innovative Technology Fund and included participation from Samsung Electronics and Advanced Micro Devices. Celestial AI's technology, Photonic Fabric, enables data to be transported as light rather than electricity, improving memory bandwidth and capacity by a factor of 25 and reducing power consumption. The company claims this could revolutionize the design of AI infrastructure by allowing for increased memory in AI server clusters without the need for additional processors.

Celestial AI's Photonic Fabric can reportedly link AI chips with up to tens of terabytes of memory, a significant increase from the less than one terabyte of onboard memory featured in the most advanced graphics cards currently on the market. The technology also allows for HBM3 memory modules to be placed further from processors, overcoming space constraints that limit memory capacity. The funding will be used to support go-to-market initiatives, with the company already working with multiple customers to commercialize Photonic Fabric.

Key takeaways:

  • Optical interconnect developer Celestial AI has raised $175 million in a Series C funding round, with participation from Samsung Electronics and Advanced Micro Devices among others.
  • The company's technology, Photonic Fabric, allows for the transport of information as light rather than electricity, potentially improving memory bandwidth and capacity by a factor of 25 and reducing power consumption.
  • Celestial AI's technology could allow for more HBM3 memory in an AI server cluster without the need for additional processors, reducing hardware costs.
  • The company plans to use the funding to support go-to-market initiatives and is working with customers to commercialize Photonic Fabric.
