Google's new Pixel 8 Pro will be the first device to run Google's generative AI models on-device, as announced by Rick Osterloh, SVP of devices and services at Google. The device's custom-built Tensor G3 chip will run condensed versions of Google's text and image-generating models, enhancing applications such as image editing. The on-device models have improved Google's Magic Eraser, a post-processing tool for photos, enabling it to remove larger objects and people without leaving smudges. The device will also feature a new model that can sharpen and enhance photo details, and an audio recording feature that provides summaries of recordings.

In addition, a large language model running on the Pixel 8 Pro will power smart replies in the Gboard keyboard app, generating higher-quality reply suggestions with better conversational awareness. Except for Magic Eraser, which is available at launch, the other on-device generative AI features will be released in December via an update.
