Reflection Ruining Your Photo? That's Why Adobe Made Its New AI Removal Tool

Dec 17, 2024 - cnet.com
Adobe has introduced a new AI-powered reflection removal tool in the Camera Raw plugin for Photoshop, designed to help photographers eliminate unwanted reflections from their images. Unlike generative AI, this tool separates the reflection from the main image without creating new elements. Marc Levoy, Adobe's vice president and fellow, explained that the tool distinguishes between the transmission image (the scene through the window) and the reflection image (the scene behind the photographer). The AI model was trained using pairs of clean and reflection-riddled images to effectively isolate the intended subjects from accidental reflections.

Currently available as a beta technology preview for raw images, Adobe plans to expand the tool's compatibility to other file types like JPEGs and HEICs and integrate it into the Lightroom ecosystem. Levoy, who has a background in computational photography and has worked on various photography and AI projects at Adobe, expressed excitement about the tool's future availability in Lightroom Mobile. This development is part of Adobe's broader effort to incorporate AI into its photo and video editing tools, offering photographers a nongenerative solution for dealing with reflections.

Key takeaways:

  • Adobe has introduced a new AI-powered tool in the Camera Raw plugin for Photoshop to remove glass reflections from photos.
  • The reflection removal tool uses AI to separate the transmission image from the reflection image without relying on generative AI.
  • The tool is currently available as a beta technology preview for raw images, with plans to expand compatibility to other file types and integrate it into Adobe's Lightroom ecosystem.
  • Adobe's focus on AI in photo editing includes both generative and nongenerative tools, with reflection removal providing a nongenerative solution for photographers.
