Replika’s new AI therapy app tries to bring you to a zen island

Jan 30, 2024 - theverge.com
AI companion company Replika has partnered with the team behind AI dating simulator Blush to launch Tomo, a wellness and meditation app available on the Apple iOS store. The app, which features an AI-generated avatar named Tomo, offers programs for personal growth, mental well-being, and fulfillment, including guided meditation, yoga, affirmation classes, and talk therapy. Users can try the app for free for three days, after which they must choose between a weekly subscription of $7.99 or an annual subscription of $49.99.

Despite its innovative concept, the app has been criticized for its similarity to regular chatbots and other meditation apps. Furthermore, the use of AI for mental health therapy remains controversial due to privacy concerns. Replika, the company behind Tomo, was banned in Italy last year for failing to meet security standards. However, Replika's CEO Eugenia Kuyda assures that the company is taking more precautions with Tomo and that user information remains private. An Android version of Tomo is expected to be released later this year.
