Samsung’s AI features on the Galaxy S24 in China reportedly ditch Google for Baidu

Jan 26, 2024 - engadget.com
The Samsung Galaxy S24 in China will not feature Google's Gemini AI, but will instead use Baidu's Ernie chatbot to power its AI features, according to a joint statement by Baidu and Samsung. The Chinese version of the phone, which received government approval last August, will have the same AI-powered features as the global version, including real-time call translation and a photo assistant, but there will be no references to Google, which has limited operations in China.

A recent report suggests that Apple has ended Samsung's 14-year run as the global smartphone shipment leader, and has claimed the top spot in the Chinese market with a 17.3% market share. Samsung did not make the top five in the Chinese market. The Galaxy S24 series, including the standard, Plus and Ultra variants, will launch in the US on January 31, 2024.

Key takeaways:

  • The Samsung Galaxy S24 in China will not use Google's Gemini AI, but instead will use Baidu's Ernie chatbot for its AI-powered features.
  • Ernie, which received Chinese government approval, can translate content and summarize lengthy text into clear, organized formats.
  • Despite Samsung's 14-year run as the global smartphone shipment leader, a recent report suggests that Apple has now claimed the top spot, with Samsung not making the top five in the Chinese market.
  • Samsung's 2024 flagship phone lineup, including the Galaxy S24 series, is set to launch in the US on January 31.
