Study: ChatGPT Both Helpful and ‘Junk Food’ for Workers

Dec 28, 2023 - pymnts.com
A recent study by Harvard Business School has found mixed results on the impact of ChatGPT, an AI tool from OpenAI, on the work of over 750 business consultants. The research found that while ChatGPT improved the speed and quality of brainstorming tasks, it was a distraction during more analytical tasks. The study also found varied reactions among workers, with some comparing it to the myth of Prometheus stealing fire from the gods, and others likening it to junk food - enjoyable but ultimately harmful.

The study also revealed that consultants who used ChatGPT produced higher-rated work when creating a business plan for a new type of shoe. However, for tasks requiring evidence-based reasoning, such as interpreting spreadsheet data, the AI was not helpful. This comes as a ResumeBuilder survey showed that nearly 40% of AI-using business leaders have replaced workers with AI this year, and 44% expect job cuts in 2024 due to AI efficiency. Despite this, 84% of business leaders believe generative AI will positively impact the workforce, according to a joint PYMNTS Intelligence-Billtrust study.

  • Consultants who used ChatGPT for tasks like brainstorming and creating business plans produced work that was rated more highly by independent evaluators.
  • However, for tasks requiring reasoning based on evidence, such as interpreting spreadsheet data, consultants who did not use the AI scored the highest.
