UCLA offers comp lit course developed by AI | TechCrunch

Dec 08, 2024 - techcrunch.com
In winter 2025, UCLA will introduce a comparative literature class featuring AI-generated materials, including a textbook, homework assignments, and TA resources. This class, covering literature from the Middle Ages to the 17th century, will utilize materials created by Kudu, an advanced textbook platform developed by UCLA professor Alexander Kusenko. This marks the first instance of AI-generated materials being used in the university's humanities division. Professor Zrinka Stahuljak contributed her previous class notes, PowerPoint presentations, and YouTube videos to aid in the creation of these materials.

The course development process typically takes three to four months, but UCLA aims to limit professors' time commitment to 20 hours, with compensation provided by Kudu. This approach is expected to allow professors and TAs more time to engage with students and ensure consistent delivery of course content. Additionally, students can interact with Kudu to ask questions, with responses based solely on the professor-provided materials, rather than external internet sources.
