Ukraine is using AI to manage the removal of Russian landmines
Jun 18, 2024 - newscientist.com
The Ukrainian government is using an artificial intelligence model to identify priority areas for de-mining the numerous Russian landmines scattered across the country. Researchers estimate that clearing all the landmines could take up to 700 years. The minelaying began with Russia's invasion of Crimea in 2014, and despite Ukrainian efforts to remove them, some areas may have to be left as a permanent "scar" on the country.
Ukrainian engineers are working tirelessly to remove the explosives, but the scale of the task is enormous. The AI model is expected to help make the task more manageable by identifying which regions should be prioritized for de-mining. The offer for this service ends on the 2nd of July 2024, with a 14-day cancellation policy.
