Video app Kino, from maker of Halide, is Apple's iPhone app of the year | TechCrunch

Dec 11, 2024 - techcrunch.com
ChatGPT may be the top app on the U.S. iPhone App Store, but Apple’s iPhone App of the Year award went to Kino, a new app for videographers from Lux, the creators of Halide. Kino, which launched in the spring, enhances mobile video recording with in-app lessons and features. It was one of three finalists for the top App Store award, alongside Runna, a running plan app, and Tripsy, a travel organization app. AI-powered apps were not among the finalists, as Apple continues to downplay AI technology, despite its significant impact on mobile consumers. However, AI-integrated apps did win in other categories, such as Adobe Lightroom for Mac App of the Year and Moises for iPad App of the Year, both focusing on artistic endeavors.

Other notable winners included Lumy as Apple Watch App of the Year, F1 TV for Apple TV, and Disney’s What If…? for Apple Vision Pro. In gaming, AFK Journey won iPhone Game of the Year, Squad Busters for iPad, Thank Goodness You’re Here! for Mac, and THRASHER: Arcade Odyssey for Apple Vision Pro. Balatro+ was named Apple Arcade Game of the Year. Additionally, six cultural impact winners were recognized, including Oko for navigation assistance for the visually impaired, language learning app EF Hello, art exploration app DailyArt, NYT Games, narrative game The Wreck, and an educational app for those living with HIV, Do You Really Want to Know? 2.
