What the Hollywood writers have agreed with the studios about AI

Sep 27, 2023 - news.ycombinator.com
The Writers Guild of America (WGA) has outlined rules regarding the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in writing. AI cannot write or rewrite literary material, and any AI-generated content will not be considered source material under the Minimum Basic Agreement (MBA). Writers can use AI in their work if the company agrees and they adhere to company policies, but they cannot be forced to use AI. Companies must disclose if any materials provided to the writer have been AI-generated.

The WGA also reserves the right to claim that using writers' material to train AI is against the MBA or other laws. WGA members will vote on accepting the overall agreement between October 2nd and 9th.

Key takeaways:

  • AI cannot write or rewrite literary material, and AI-generated material will not be considered source material under the MBA.
  • A writer can choose to use AI when performing writing services, if the company consents and the writer follows company policies, but the company cannot require the writer to use AI software.
  • The Company must disclose to the writer if any materials given to the writer have been generated by AI or incorporate AI-generated material.
  • The WGA reserves the right to assert that exploitation of writers’ material to train AI is prohibited by MBA or other law.
