Whomp-whomp: AI PCs make users less productive

Nov 24, 2024 - theregister.com
A study conducted by Intel found that users of personal computers with built-in AI services are less productive than those using traditional PCs. The study, which surveyed 6,000 people in Germany, France, and the UK, found that people lose an average of 15 hours a week on "digital chores" such as writing emails and managing files. Intel argues that these tasks could be delegated to AI, potentially saving up to four hours a week. However, the study also found that current AI PC owners spend longer on tasks than their counterparts using traditional PCs, as many AI users spend a significant amount of time figuring out how to communicate effectively with AI tools.

The study revealed that 86% of consumers have never heard of or used an AI PC, and there are several misconceptions about AI PCs, including that they are a gimmick or only for professionals, and concerns about data privacy and security. Only 32% of respondents unfamiliar with AI PCs said they'd consider purchasing one for their next upgrade, compared to 64% of those who have already used an AI PC. Intel and its partners are faced with the challenge of educating consumers about the potential benefits of AI PCs and addressing their concerns.
