Wi-Fi 7 quietly took off while everyone was looking at AI

Jan 11, 2024 - theverge.com
At CES 2024, major laptop manufacturers showcased their latest designs, chips, and notably, support for Wi-Fi 7, a significant upgrade for competitive gamers. Wi-Fi 7, which allows a device to connect to a router on multiple bands, was first introduced in gaming laptops. This feature, known as Multi-Link Operation, provides lower latency on busy networks, a critical aspect for gamers. Some of the first laptops with Wi-Fi 7 are the 16-inch Razer Blade 16 and the 18-inch MSI Titan 18 HX A14V, priced at $3,000 and $5,000 respectively, and due out in mid-January. More affordable models include the $2,099 Lenovo Legion 7i, the $1,499.99 HP Omen Transcend, and two Alienware gaming laptops from Dell.

However, Asus, one of the first companies to launch a Wi-Fi 7 router, did not list Wi-Fi 7 in the specs of any of the laptops in its ROG lineup announced at the show. For gamers looking to upgrade their laptops and considering Wi-Fi 7 routers, there are a few options on the market, including those from Acer, MSI, Netgear, and ROG, although the choices are still limited and mostly expensive. Despite the focus on artificial intelligence at CES 2024, the introduction of Wi-Fi 7 in laptops is a significant development, with the Wi-Fi Alliance now certifying the standard.
