World's first RISC-V laptop with Ubuntu preloaded touts AI smarts and octa-core chip

Jun 14, 2024 - theregister.com
DeepComputing has unveiled the DC-Roma RISC-V Laptop II, the first RV-based laptop to run Ubuntu straight out of the box. The device uses a system on a chip (SoC) from Chinese firm SpacemiT, featuring eight 64-bit X60 cores running at up to 2 GHz, and a neural processing unit (NPU) with 2 TOPS. The laptop is a significant step for RISC-V's ambitions in the PC market, despite the chip's architecture being relatively unknown and its frequency not being particularly impressive.

The laptop's 2 TOPS NPU is also not as powerful as Canonical's claims suggest, with its AI capabilities being limited. The laptop comes with up to 16 GB of LPDDR4X memory, which may limit users to running small models. Despite these limitations, DeepComputing and Canonical have achieved a first in offering the full Linux experience in a regular laptop, which is a significant milestone for RISC-V.

Key takeaways:

  • DeepComputing has announced the DC-Roma RISC-V Laptop II, the first RV-based laptop in the world to run Ubuntu out of the box.
  • The new laptop features a SoC from a Chinese firm, SpacemiT, and boasts eight 64-bit X60 cores running at up to 2 GHz, and an NPU with 2 TOPS.
  • Despite claims of "powerful AI capabilities", the 2 TOPS NPU may not be able to run AI models particularly fast, and the laptop's memory may limit users to running smaller models.
  • This release is a significant step for RISC-V's ambitions in the PC market, offering the full Linux experience in a regular laptop.
