X says its new image generator, Aurora, will launch for all users within the week | TechCrunch

Dec 09, 2024 - techcrunch.com
X, formerly known as Twitter, has reintroduced an image generator named Aurora to its Grok assistant. Developed by Elon Musk's AI company, xAI, Aurora is designed to excel at photorealistic rendering and follow text instructions, with capabilities to edit user-provided images. Initially added and then removed, Aurora is now officially announced and available in select countries, with plans to roll out globally within a week. While it can generate high-quality images across various domains, support for editing existing images will be introduced later.

During testing, Aurora demonstrated few restrictions, capable of generating images of public and copyrighted figures. However, it avoided generating explicit content, though graphic images were not entirely restricted. Despite its capabilities, Aurora showed some flaws, such as unnatural blending of objects and issues with rendering human hands. The image generator is accessible through the Grok tab on X’s mobile apps and the web.
